The Magic Pill for Weight Loss: Part 1

Two core concepts — self-integrity and inner strength — form the foundation for success in any personal challenge. This is especially true for weight loss, the most personal of personal challenges. When applied, these two concepts work without fail and are the closest you will ever come to a magic pill for your weight loss. To understand how these concepts work together, let’s first examine them individually.

There is more than one type of strength to consider. “Survivor” strength develops first in our lives through our various experiences and emanates directly from our circumstances. “Inner” strength evolves afterward in our lives through our commitment to growth and emanates from our perspectives about our circumstances.

There are multiple challenges in our lives and that means we all have a combination of survivor and inner strength we’re working with… it’s part of our life’s journey to becoming fully developed human beings. Each strength has a distinct look and feel:

Survivor Strength vs. Inner Strength
fearful - trusting
nervous - calm
fragile - powerful
defensive - self-evident
opinionated - open
arrogant - humble
dramatic - plain
self-preservation - kindness
resilient - transcendent
struggle - journey
fleeting - permanent
requires external support - provides its own support

The type of strength you draw upon in a given challenge reveals whether you’re operating from negative or positive consciousness. This is not as simple as having a negative or positive attitude. Think of consciousness as awareness of your beliefs and behaviours. Survivor strength, associated with negative consciousness, indicates a low level of awareness. Inner strength, associated with positive consciousness, denotes a high level of awareness. Interestingly, you can have a positive attitude toward your weight loss but still find yourself functioning using the low level beliefs and behaviours of negative consciousness.

It’s important to identify where you’re operating from in a given challenge because meaningful and lasting transformation can only be created from positive consciousness. Anything less is only forcing superficial and temporary change. If you repeatedly struggle with your weight, perhaps losing some and then gaining it all back plus more, you’re drawing upon survivor strength. The permanent results you’re trying so hard to produce are not accessible from here! The big question for you and so many others then is how do you develop and build inner strength?

Review the look and feel of the two strengths again and list the top 3 recurring situations in your life where you tend to feel more survivor strength than inner strength. For example, you may feel – nervous – about initiating conversations with a certain person; or you may feel – defensive – towards someone’s judgement of you; or perhaps you may feel frustrated with the - lack of support – from a loved one.

Now take a closer look at what you’ve just written. More than likely, you’ve just identified 3 specific triggers that may have you seeking solace in the kitchen. When it comes to weight loss, knowing and addressing specifics is more effective than trying to deal with a broader term like stress.
